Financial Aid

Applying For Aid

Your Guide to Financial Aid

Start with the FAFSA

The Service Central office at CCU exists to partner with you in your college investment. This step-by-step guide will help you understand the financial aid application process beginning with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The majority of students at Colorado Christian University qualify to receive some level of financial assistance. In order to be considered for any type of financial aid all students must fill out the FAFSA.

1.) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Although the form states you can complete the FAFSA before you file your taxes, we recommend you use actual figures from your income tax return. Estimating your tax information will result in your file being selected for verification, which will lengthen the application process. For the most accurate and fastest results file the FAFSA online.
2.) The Department of Education will select some students who have completed the FAFSA for a process called verification. You are notified on your Student Aid Report (SAR) if you have been chosen and you will need to submit additional documentation to the Service Central office. Minimum additional documentation includes a copy of your federal income tax return (signed), tax schedules, copies of your W2 forms, and a verification worksheet completed and signed by you and, if applicable, your spouse. These documents can be faxed to the Service Central office if needed. (303.963.3231-fax)
3.) Complete the admission process as quickly as possible. Until your admission file is complete and you have been fully admitted to a degree-seeking program, the Service Central office cannot review your file for awarding.
4.) Once you have been awarded financial aid, you will receive an e-mail advising you to log into WebAdvisor and view the financial aid that is available to you. You will need to accept or decline your awards online.
5.) If you are accepting Federal loan funds as a part of your financial award, you will be required to complete additional steps to obtain the funds. This will include an entrance counseling session and signing a promissory note for the loan.
6.) CCU correspondence to students is primarily through e-mail. Students are responsible to keep their e-mail contact information up-to-date and to check their e-mail inbox regularly. Students’ current account information is always accessible in WebAdvisor
7.) Do your research on outside scholarships! There are many scholarships available for students who wish to pursue them.
8.) Secure payment arrangements for all charges not covered by financial aid before the semester begins. Payment options include cash, check, credit card, and electronic check.
9.)
Keep copies of all information you fill out and submit to CCU, including your FAFSA.

Additional Documents

Financial Aid Documents

To help guide students through the financial aid process, CCU has put together the following resources:

  • The Financial Aid Process document offers students a step-by-step guide for completing the financial aid application process.
  • The cash by class plan enables students who are paying with cash, check or credit card to enroll in all of their courses at the start of the semester without having to pay their balance in full at the time of registration.
  • The Verification Worksheet must be completed only by students who have been selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education. Please return your completed worksheet to the Service Central office.
  • If your account has a credit balance, you may request a refund through your WebAdvisor account by entering your bank account information. You will then receive a direct deposit of your refund.
  • The Low Income Worksheet is only completed by those students who have been required to do so by the Service Central office. Please turn in your completed worksheet to the Service Central office.
  • The 1098-T Forms for 2008 were mailed out to students January 2009, for qualified tuition expenses billed in 2008.

Scholarships, Grants, and Loans

It is important that you use all resources available to you in financing your education. New students must complete the Application for Admission and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to receiving a financial aid award. To qualify for federal financial aid, continuing students must complete the FAFSA on an annual basis. Questions regarding financial aid awarding should be referred to the Service Central office.

Employer Reimbursement

Many employers offer tuition reimbursement plans to employees continuing their education. Contact your company’s human resources or benefits department to see if this cost-saving option is available to you. If available, please set-up this payment option with CCU by contacting the Service Central office. Students may also take advantage of CCU’s Third Party Deferred Payment Option while waiting for reimbursement from their employer.

Tuition Assistance

Many military bases offer assistance for higher education expenses. If you will be using military TA for payment, please contact the Service Central office at ARSupport@ccu.edu to set up this payment option.

Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society

Colorado Christian University is a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, the largest and oldest chapter-based honor society for adult students. Through this organization, CCU desires to recognize and honor non-traditional adult students for their academic excellence and superior leadership in higher education. Members of Alpha Sigma Lambda can apply for scholarship through that organization. Learn more about student requirements for membership.

Federal Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students. Unlike a loan, they do not have to be paid back to the government. Eligibility is based on a formula which is revised and approved by Congress annually. The amount of funding is based on the student’s financial need, as determined by information supplied on the FAFSA. See the CAGS Financial Aid Policies Handbook for more information on Federal Pell Grants.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

FSEOG grants are awarded to undergraduate students. Like the Federal Pell grant, this is money that does not need to be paid back to the government. Unlike the Federal Pell grant, funds are very limited. Each school is given an allotment, which they must then award to the students with the most need. If you are not Pell eligible you will not receive these funds. Even if you are Pell eligible you may not receive an FSEOG. Upon completion of a bachelor’s degree, a student is no longer eligible for FSEOG. See theCAGS Financial Aid Policies Handbook (PDF) for more information on the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.

College Opportunity Fund (COF)

Students at Colorado Christian University may be eligible to receive Colorado’s College Opportunity Fund (COF) stipends to offset their cost of attendance. COF stipends are paid to eligible undergraduate students by the State of Colorado when they attend a participating institution of higher education.

CCU is seeking authorization for COF funding from the Colorado Legislature for the 2009-2010 academic year. The stipend is a per credit hour dollar amount that is determined by the Colorado State Legislature, and is subject to annual state funding availability.

Eligible students who attend a private Colorado college or university must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Colorado resident
  • Be a graduate of a Colorado high school OR
  • Successfully complete a non-public home-based educational program in Colorado
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by federal Pell Grant eligibility

Loans

Loans can be an important financial resource for students who need help getting through school and are willing to pay for their education with future earnings. For additional detailed descriptions of different types of loans available to adult and graduate students, please refer to the CAGS Financial Aid Policies Handbook.

  • A subsidized Federal Stafford loan is a low-interest loan made to the student by a lending institution such as a bank, credit union, or savings and loan association. These loans are insured by a guarantee agency and reinsured by the federal government. The federal government pays the interest on the loan while the student is enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours/semester for an undergraduate student) and during a “grace period” which follows separation from the school.
  • Unsubsidized Federal Stafford loans are available for students who do not have full or any Subsidized Federal Stafford loan eligibility, or for independent students who need more aid than a Subsidized Federal Stafford loan can provide. They have many of the same terms as the Subsidized Federal Stafford loan except that the student pays the interest while in school, rather than the government.
  • Federal PLUS loans are low interest loans made to the parent of a dependent student attending at least half-time (6 credit hours/semester for an undergraduate student). Capital is provided by an outside lending institution and is subject to credit approval. A parent can borrow up to the cost of education as determined by CCU’s Service Central office, minus any other aid received.
  • Alternative (private) loan eligibility may be based on past credit history and may require a co-signer.

Failure to make payments as scheduled will result in finance charges assessed on the outstanding balance.

CCU correspondence to students is primarily through e-mail. Students are responsible to keep their e-mail contact information up-to-date and to check their e-mail regularly for information regarding their CCU account. Students’ current account balance information is always accessible through their WebAdvisor online account.

Veterans/GI Bill Benefits
CCU is approved for federal veterans’ education benefits to qualified students. Applicants for these benefits may secure forms by contacting Service Central at 303-963-3230 or VASupport@ccu.edu. Eligible students should keep in mind that benefits may not be received for a number of weeks after enrollment and should be prepared to meet University expenses until the veteran benefits arrive. Third Party Deferred Payment Option may be used for qualified students with GI Bill benefits.

Monthly Payment Plan
CCU offers students the option to pay their tuition and fees through a monthly payment plan called FACTS. Monthly payments will be automatically deducted from a personal bank account or credit card. The payment plan agreement can be set up for one semester or annually to allow students to budget their tuition costs monthly. Please note that to take advantage of the monthly payment plan you must complete the agreement before classes begin. To sign up for the plan please visit the NBS e-Cashier Website.

Cash by Class Plan
The Cash by Class plan enables students who are paying with cash, check or credit card to enroll in all of their courses at the start of the semester without having to pay their balance in full at the time of registration. Payment for each course is due when the class begins. Students making payments on the Cash by Class plan will not accrue interest charges on their account. Please complete the Cash by Class (PDF) form to activate this plan. Cash by Class must be renewed each semester to remain current. There are no administrative fees to set up the Cash by Class Plan.

Financial Aid Method
To receive a financial aid award a student must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial Aid must be applied to the student bill. Overpayment will be refunded to the student, if requested. If financial aid does not pay the entire bill, the student is responsible to pay the remainder of the bill through either a Full Payment Method or a Monthly Payment Method.
